August already?

Thursday, August 1

More good news today! The eye doctor performed his weekly examination and determined that both Devyn and Kinley are still ROP (eye disease common in preemies) free! This is especially good news because the girls have been on oxygen for over 6 weeks already (since birth), and the oxygen can contribute to the development of the disease. Now their weekly exams will change to every other week. Due to the eye exams, Thursdays are an extra-quiet day in the NICU. The nurses keep the girls' beds darker than usual to help their eyes.

Kinley's big, beautiful, and healthy eyes!!!

Kinley received her second bottle today. The nurse and I realized a little too late that we probably should have tried the bottle much later in the day to give her some more time to recover from her eye exam. She was still worn out from the stress--I'm sure the girls scream throughout the exam, but I haven't been able to bring myself to be around during them...or else I think we'd all be screaming!

Kinley's "hungry face!"

Kinley still did fine. Her biggest challenge is that her sucking reflex is so strong she sucks in too much milk and then can't get it all down. It was a much slower process today because she needed frequent breaks. She managed to eat about a third of her total feeding, which is still very good for a beginner.

Devyn with her pacifier

Devyn continues to do well on CPAP. No word yet on how long she will stay on it, or when she will be switched to oxygen flow-only, like her sister. She is finally starting to show more signs that she is ready for a bottle as well. I think she's getting jealous of her sister!

I cannot believe how big these girls are getting! Devyn now weighs 5 lbs. 11 oz....she'll be 6 lbs. before we know it! Kinley stayed the same weight last night.

Kinley just had her breathing tube re-taped to her face after she ripped it off. She's not happy!

   Typical Devyn:-)
